We all have the ability to write. What we may not have is the ability to write in such a way that our reader receives the message we wish to share.
So, what is writing? Writing is the pursuit of composing text, or, the act or process of one who writes, (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/writing). Writing is the result of picking up a pencil, or typing on a computer, employing words, strung into sentences, for the purpose of sharing a story, a message, to educate, or give understanding. (JL Keez!)
Of course, this definition could be expanded many times over, but for now I think we ‘get it’!
This all sounds quite easy – let me tell you, it is not! Especially where the intent is to educate, entertain, or engage. Just how words join together into sentences is indeed an art – an art of creativity born from employing inner wisdom coupled with an ability to paint a vision, infuse emotion, create intrigue, and leave the reader searching for more of your words!
How then is this art acquired?
Through patience!
Actually, by starting at the beginning, which is a very good place to start!
Article or blog writing are similar. As these documents are usually short, they lend themselves to understanding how written outcomes are formed. They are then a great point of conception for learning.
Structure is important as it guides the narrative in a logical, progressive manner. Structure is as follows:
Title and Tagline
Introduction
Body of Work
Conclusion
Additionally, consideration is given to:
• An engaging opening sentence
• Elements of colour, flavour, texture, aroma ie creativity
• Emotion
• Opening lines of enquiry where closing each occurs ‘down the track’! • Designing a logical progression of text
• Shorter sentences rather than ones that seem to have no end!
• Incorporating the title and tagline into your writing
• A clever conclusion summing up your thoughts
Finally:
• Statistics/Quotes/Copyright
Daunting? At first this may see you decide to forget it! However, like all education, time and practice results in beautiful pieces worthy of being read.
Once this basic structure is mastered, the world of writing opens it door to you. From this vantage point larger documents can be scribed, and eventually, books.
I encourage beginners to plan their work through actually writing the outline innate form. This may experience morphing into new directions as you write. However, this keeps one on track ensuring the finished. polished piece, is not simply a ‘waffle’ of words going nowhere!
The intention of this blog is to introduce would-be writers to this art. Hopefully, this peeks interest so pursuing this education follows. This leads me to suggest you read the next set of blogs titled, ‘Mastering The Art Of Writing: Your Choice!’ each will focus on a particular element that will feature in the specific title! eg ‘Mastering The Art Of Writing: Your Choice! Title and Tagline …
As you consider your decision, do understand, that, “No” writing is not simply words on a page!
Writing is an art …
